Tips to Have an Affordable (and Fun) Staycation

More and more people are deciding to stay home for their vacations instead of heading out somewhere. It is often more affordable to have a staycation than it is to actually go on a vacation. You are saving money on the travel (gas and plane rides) and the hotel. That being said, staycations can often get expensive because you end up splurging on other things. However, it doesn't have to be that way.

Here are some tips to have an affordable (and fun) vacation at home.

Enjoy Special Meals

You don't need to cook three meals a day during vacation. Give yourself a break and go out to eat with your family. You may want to splurge on a fancy restaurant that you always wanted to try, though you can also stretch your dollar by going to some local restaurants and trying their specials!

Check out Free Local Events

Many small towns (and larger ones) often offer free local events for anyone that is interested. You may be able to see an outdoor movie, enjoy a free day at the local museum, or even see a concert without spending a dime!

Look for Any Local Festivals and Fairs

Your town (or one close to you) may have a festival or fair for you to enjoy. This may be just a local carnival, though you may be lucky enough to find an art or musical festival nearby. This may cost a few dollars to visit but can be an enjoyable time.

Go Camping in Your Own Backyard

Don't want to waste money on a campsite? You don't have to. You can pitch a tent in your own backyard. What is even better is that you can use your own bathroom when you need to! If you are able, you may want to start a campfire and cook over it. Nothing is better than spending time under the stars, eating Smores by a campfire!

Spend Some Time Outdoors

Many people enjoy hiking and a staycation is the perfect time to check out some local parks near you. You may even make a day trip or two to check out some that are a little farther away. You may not have time to hike there when you are busy with work, making it a perfect time to check them out on your vacation.

Try Geocaching

You may also want to try geocaching. This is a fun experience for both children and adults. Download an app or visit a geocaching website to find your next buried treasure!

Make Your Own Spa Day

If you don't want to spend money on a fancy spa day, make one yourself. Grab a few candles and your bubble bath and enjoy! You may also want to try a facial treatment or give yourself a manicure or pedicure.

Try Something New

There is nothing better to do when you are at home than to try something new. Is this the year that you want to start a garden? Use your vacation time to plant seeds inside and get your garden plot ready. Want to try painting? You can either take a class or just buy the supplies that you need and get started. Want to try to write a book? Find a quiet place and just start jotting down your thoughts.

Enjoy Your Staycation

Though you may be tempted to spend a lot of money when you are staying at home to vacation, the truth is that there are plenty of things that you can do for free (or fairly cheap). You may want to eat out a few times, but other than that, you can take advantage of any free events in your area. You can even look for any local fairs and festivals! This is also the perfect opportunity to try something new.
